FAQ - Sliding Scale Fees
-
Who qualifies for the sliding scale?
We believe that financial barriers should never prevent someone from accessing mental health support. Anyone who feels they need financial assistance is welcome to access our sliding scale — there are no restrictions based on income level or funding source. If you feel the full counselling rate isn’t financially feasible, you qualify. It’s that simple.
-
How much does counselling cost with the sliding scale?
Our sliding scale is designed to offer flexibility and affordability. For clients accessing financial support through programs like Alberta Income Support — or anyone who expresses a need — we typically offer the first 7 sessions at $8 per session.
After that, sessions are usually adjusted to $20 per session for sessions 8 through 13, with the understanding that this may be revisited depending on the client’s circumstances. Your counsellor can reassess your rate with you if continuing at the $8 rate is necessary. Our goal is to ensure that you receive the support you need, for as long as you need it. -
What if I can't afford the $8 sessions?
If even the lowest fee on the scale presents a challenge, please let us know. We understand that everyone’s situation is unique, and we are committed to working with you to ensure counselling remains accessible. We’ll explore alternative options with you on a case-by-case basis.
-
Do I need to bring documents or proof of income?
No documentation or proof of income is required. Our sliding scale operates on the honour system. If you say you need financial support, we trust you. We strive to reduce stigma and simplify access to care by removing unnecessary barriers.
-
Can I switch to a different rate partway through?
Yes! We understand that financial circumstances can change — for better or worse — and we encourage open conversations with your counsellor if your ability to pay changes during your time with us. Whether you need to adjust your rate up or down, we’ll support you in finding a plan that works.
-
Are there limits to how long I can stay on the sliding scale?
There’s no strict limit. While we typically offer the $8 rate for the first 7 sessions and then move to $20 for sessions 8–13, these are guidelines — not rules. We reassess based on your needs, in conversation with you and your counsellor. If it makes the most sense for you to remain at a lower rate beyond that point, we’re more than willing to make that accommodation.
